Thoughts at the gas pump

Posted Jun-10-22 at 2:30 PM By Jake Rosen

Standing at the pump this morning, pondering life, it came to me….  The new normal is expensive.  I mean, things have been crazy and upside down the past couple of years.  People’s lives were tossed around more than any other time I can remember, it was a little crazy to say the least.  But, now “a little crazy” is getting expensive.

So, this had me thinking about how it’s effecting my customers?  You guys and gals that rock my hobby world have to be feeling the pinch too?  Right?  This made me think about the hobby shop and all the behind-the-scenes stuff that goes on, that I usually don’t talk about.  I want to fill you all in on, or remind you all of, a few things….

First, we are working hard to keep our prices as low as we possibly can.  We know your buck has to stretch further these days; we keep that in mind every day.  Our prices are consistently the lowest in the area.  No hoops to jump through, no loyalty programs where you get a little back later, just the best price we can give and everyone gets a fair deal every visit.

We are at or below the interweb pricing on most of the big-ticket items.  We know we’ve got competition and strive to earn your business every trip.  We know there’s more to business than low prices, but heck it’s a great place to start!  Why not save yourself some money on something you enjoy?

Did you know we ship?  That’s right, we ship US Postal and UPS.  So, if it makes more sense to call in or email us an order, please do so!  Obviously, we do not ship big items (UPS price hikes are killing that) but for smalls we’re happy to box it and get it out to you.

Because gas is so expensive at the moment, you can also call in ahead and make sure we have the products you need on hand.  You can ask for them to be set aside and we’ll hold them until you arrive.

Special orders, no problem.  Supply has been getting better, so special orders are easier than they have been.  Call, email, or ask in store, we can get you what you need.

So those are the things I was mulling over while pumping my gas this morning ….  I’d like to add two more that just came to mind.

Let us know what we can do for you.  We’re open to suggestions; we always welcome them (even if we can’t implement them right away).  New items to stock, new ways of operating, etc …  e-mail me your ideas and thoughts!

Lastly, please help a brother out and spread the word about our hobby shop.  Reminding other hobby people about us is important.  We’re a valuable resource, but sometimes, in their busy day to day life, people forget ….  Mention us by name to anyone new, and anyone who’s in the hobby.  Word of mouth advertising is the best and it really helps.

Wishing you all the best,
Jake

We Buy Used RC's!

Posted May-26-22 at 12:42 PM By Jake Rosen

We're always on the look out for large lots or collections of rc items.  We even buy slot cars and other hobby related lots.  The bigger, the better, but we like small lots as well.

We'll travel to you, help figure out a fair price, and clear all your stuff in one shot.

We also take donations.  We use these to help the rc community in our area.

We're happy to help with estate clean ups, or handling a large collections from some one who recently passed away.

Send us an email with some info, and maybe a few photos, on what you might have for sale.  [email protected]

Please keep in mind, this is mostly for local, or Northern California sales.  Long distance rc is really tough with the shipping.

More musings from the Hobby Shop:

I had a customer in the other day, hadn’t seen him for a year or two.  He’s an awesome guy, who comes and goes in the hobby of RC Cars.  He’s back into the hobby and on his last visit he mentioned he’d been coming here since he was eight years old.  And, up in his attic, he still has almost every car he’s gotten at the shop.

Both of those facts make me smile.  He’s got a lot of cool cars and trucks up in the attic.  And, while I’m not exactly sure how old he is now, he’s been coming in for a long time.  Most of his life in fact.  He doesn’t consider going anywhere else when rc cars are involved.

We’ve been doing hobbies, mostly radio controlled, for a long time.  30+ years now.  We’ve seen a lot come and go over the years.  We’ve held true to our main mission, treating customers fairly and helping them enjoy their hobbies.

We offer products at discounted prices.  We always have.  The current trend is to raise prices and offer a “loyalty” card.  We never agree with this train of thought, as it benefits the owners but not the customers.  Our idea is that everyone gets the best deal we can offer every day.  No jumping through hoops, no waiting for money back, just a great price and saving money right now.  Prices on many items are at, or below, the web prices of places like amazon.

We strive to offer excellent customer service.  Helping with advice, repairs, upgrades and the like.  We’re here with smiles and welcome everyone into the shop.  We’re a politically free zone.  Come on in and enjoy some hobby time.  Leave life’s complications outside the door.  Unwind, shoot the bull, enjoy a friendly face, a smile and a kind word.

The supply chain woes have not affected the hobbies too much yet.  Things will possibly be more challenging during the holidays, but we’re already warehousing inventory and preparing to have a great holiday season.  Let your family know now, we’re here for them.  We’re here for you.  While gift cards are always a great, easy idea, if you’ve got something special in mind please have your family let us know early so we can help to make your dreams come true.

We’re currently holding a raffle in the shop.  It’s free and you can win an Arrma BigRock RC truck, battery and charger.  Stop in and check it out, grab a ticket.  One per customer, per day, free.  Signing up for our e-mail list is the only catch.

Well, that’s about it for this round.  Thanks for reading and thank you for your continued support.  We’re happy to be here for you!

Random thoughts ...

Fall is here and the weather seems to be changing daily.  Personally, it’s my favorite time of the year in Sonoma County.  Perfect for enjoying your hobby, no matter what it is!  Aside from hobby adventures, I enjoy gardening and it’s the time of year to clear and clean things up.  Vegetables are finishing, trees are losing leaves and getting ready for winter.  Cool mornings and warm afternoons make for the perfect weather to be outside ….

At the shop, we’re actually prepping for the holidays already.  Clearing space to store inventory, cleaning, rearranging, organizing, etc …  We’re also retrofitting our ceiling lights to LED's, replacing the older fluorescent lighting.  Stop in and let us know if you can tell/see the difference!

As for hobbies, let’s see ….

The No Prep racing is still going strong.  The third Sunday of the month is when it happens locally.  You can find info on the group on this facebook page:  Sonoma County RC Drag Racing  Changes are in the works for 2022, including allowing tire prep and a timing tree.  Around Nor-Cal, there’s drag racing every weekend, plenty of cash races as well …

For Rock Crawling, the 2nd Sunday is when you’ll find the group out at Flat Rock in Santa Rosa.  Frank has been organizing fun runs on this day, different formats are used.  Guys and gals are always welcome out there, any day.  Perhaps, with the time change coming, night crawlers will start up again?  Check out the facebook page here: Sonoma County Scalers

Flying?  Yes, it’s the perfect time of the year for flying anything RC.  The cool mornings and warm afternoons are perfect.  The wind is also more mellow this time of year.  Both of our local clubs, Liberty Fliers and the Wine Country Flyers have new runways and field improvements.  You can find more info at each or their websites:  WCFlyers  and Liberty Fliers
