July 24th, 2011, was the 2nd annual ISC Side Street Speed Meet, held in Santa Rosa, California. The International Speed Challenge group hosts a few events across the country and we're very lucky this grass roots event is in our area.
For the most part, this particular ISC event was about finding out how fast your r/c car is really going. There were a few people contesting records in ISC classes, but mostly it was a fun day of bragging rights. Not a big event by any means, with only a handful of participants and spectators, the coolness of speed running r/c cars can not be judged by attendance. Having been to both the local events, I really enjoy the low key, laid back atmosphere mixed with the high intensity adrenaline rush of driving high speed r/c cars.
Gary O', the Event Director for the day, estimates over 70 timed runs were done during the day. Some slow, some fast, some ending in smoke, some ending in flying cars or crashing trucks. Below is a run down of what some of the drivers accomplished ...
Richard Lewis: Stock 2wd Slash, 21.94MPH
Alec Beaubois: Slash on 3s, 54.28MPH
Jake Rosen: 4x4 Slash on 2s, 54.27MPH
Ryan Schellerup: HPI Blitz on 3s, 56.63MPH
Paul Harding: 4x4 Slash on 4s, 59.41MPH
Kevin Osman: 2wd Stock on 1s, 70.00MPH
Greg Hurtado: 1/8 4wd on 8s, 81.51MPH
Kevin Osman: 2wd Stock on 2s, 91.40MPH
Jake Rosen: 4wd Production on 2s, 95.36MPH
While no records were broken on this day, the speeds were still pretty fast for the Side Street Meet. New drivers were introduced to speed running their cars and I'm sure there will be more drivers at the next event. (possibly one in September?)
